For many years Kasper and Daniella Naef and their two children lived in the old farmhouse at the bottom of their rural acreage and dreamed about the home they would eventually build – largely themsleves - up the hill and away from the road. This home would be unique in almost every respect: the lower floors walls constructed of Insulated Concrete Forms (ICF); the upper floor walls of R-40 Structural Insulated Panels; the subtly curved roof has blown in closed-cell foam insulation; the hydronically-heated concrete floors are built on open-web floor trusses for ease of running ducts and plumbing. The combination of efficient heat source and energy saving envelope plus HRV, makes this home very economical to heat and comfortable in the heat of the summer.

The innovations continue inside. There is a free-standing zero-clearance stove for back-up. Kitchen and bath countertops are of concrete, custom-built by the client. The subtle curve of the roof is accentuated by precision-milled clear pine ceiling boards. As befits a rural residence, there is an ample mudroom, located immediately adjacent to the entry.
